Tug Chief Engineer

About the role

Amentum is seeking an experienced Tug Chief Engineer to lead engineering operations aboard a tug vessel supporting a US Navy program on Diego Garcia. The role ensures safe, efficient, and reliable vessel performance through oversight of all mechanical and electrical systems.

Key responsibilities

• Manage operation, maintenance, and repair of main and auxiliary engines, propulsion, generators, electrical, hydraulic, and HVAC systems.
• Supervise engineering crew, assign daily tasks, and ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
• Develop and monitor preventive and scheduled maintenance programs.
• Conduct inspections of engineering spaces, monitor fuel, oil, temperature, and pressure parameters.
• Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical or electrical issues to minimize downtime.
• Maintain accurate engineering logs, maintenance records, and defect reports.
• Coordinate with the Captain and deck team for integrated vessel operations.
• Manage inventory of spare parts, tools, and supplies.
• Lead emergency response for propulsion failures, fires, flooding, or hazardous material incidents.
• Oversee refueling and bunkering procedures.
• Mentor and train junior engineering staff.

Required profile

• 5–7 years of engineering experience, including 2–3 years in a Chief Engineer or similar leadership role on tugs or maritime vessels.
• Proven ability to manage complex marine engineering systems and lead a crew.
• Strong knowledge of international, flag‑state, and military regulations.
