International Lawyer – Commercial & Tax Litigation

About the role

Our client, a specialist investment and advisory firm, is seeking an experienced International Lawyer to join its legal team in Mauritius. The role focuses on high‑stakes commercial and tax litigation across key offshore jurisdictions.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage commercial and tax litigation matters, including High Court proceedings in BVI, South Africa, Cayman Islands, and England.
• Advise on disputes involving international tax structures, corporate governance, trusts, fiduciary duties, shareholder issues, and cross‑border contracts.
• Provide support in arbitration (institutional and ad‑hoc) and alternative dispute resolution.
• Collaborate with internal compliance, corporate services, tax advisory teams and external counsel across jurisdictions.
• Conduct legal research, draft pleadings, witness statements, submissions, and settlement agreements.
• Advise clients and internal stakeholders on risk mitigation, regulatory compliance, and dispute avoidance.
• Contribute to business development through client relationship support, proposal preparation, and thought‑leadership activities.
• Ensure compliance with local licensing requirements and ethical standards.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer in a common‑law jurisdiction (England & Wales, South Africa, BVI, or Cayman) with admission to practice in one or more focus jurisdictions.
• 5–10 years post‑qualification experience in commercial litigation with substantial High Court exposure.
• Proven track record in commercial tax litigation and related disputes.
• Experience in arbitration (commercial or international).
• Strong knowledge of laws and procedures in BVI, Cayman Islands, South Africa, and England & Wales.
• Ability to work from Mauritius (existing work permit or eligibility for occupational permit).
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
