Emergency Vehicle Technician

About the role

The Emergency Vehicle Technician ensures that fire department apparatus and a wide range of heavy equipment remain operational and safe. This role involves repairing, overhauling, and performing preventive maintenance on fire trucks, ARFF units, ambulances, and other construction and material‑handling machines.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain, repair, and service assigned fire vehicles, including structural ARFF and ambulance apparatus.
• Perform heavy‑equipment maintenance such as installation, troubleshooting, diagnostics, and preventive upkeep.
• Remove, inspect, and rebuild engines, hydraulic and pneumatic components using computerized test equipment and calibration devices.
• Repair air‑conditioning systems, calibrate load‑monitoring indicators, and rebuild hydraulic cylinders, valves, planetary drives, suspensions, springs, bushings, and kingpins.
• Replace seals, bearings, axle brakes, and crane rigging; provide input for work orders, invoices, and equipment repair records.
• Follow all safety policies, including hazardous‑waste handling, and conduct recovery operations as needed.
• Act as point‑of‑contact for maintenance issues in the absence of the Maintenance Supervisor or Foreman.

Required profile

• Minimum two years of heavy‑vehicle maintenance experience in emergency, civilian, military, or tactical environments.
• High school diploma or equivalent; valid driver’s licence.
• Prefer EVT Level 1 certification in Fire Apparatus, Ambulance, or ARFF.
• Physical ability to stand, walk, stoop, lift up to 50 lb regularly and assist with lifts up to 100 lb.

Required skills

• Diesel engine repair and overhaul.
• Hydraulic and pneumatic system diagnostics and repair.
• Electrical troubleshooting using electronic test equipment.
• Use of computerized diagnostic tools, calibration devices, gauges.
• Reading schematics, blueprints, and technical drawings.
• Knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, ASME, OEM standards and military vehicle regulations.
