Elevator Mechanic – Maintenance & Repair

About the role

The Elevator Mechanic will ensure the safe, reliable operation of embassy elevators through routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs. Reporting to the Elevator Supervisor, the role combines mechanical and electrical expertise to keep all elevator systems compliant with certification and licensing requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain a safe workplace and adhere to all Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance standards.
• Diagnose and repair faults in brakes, motors, switches, and control systems using test lamps, ammeters, voltmeters, and other diagnostic tools.
• Disassemble defective units and replace parts such as locks, gears, cables, and safety devices.
• Lubricate bearings and moving parts to reduce friction.
• Install or repair transformers, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, motors, heating units, and conduit systems.
• Interpret blueprints, drawings, and wiring diagrams to locate equipment issues.
• Perform preventative maintenance according to published schedules and provide input for maintenance plan improvements.
• Conduct equipment testing with voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, continuity testers, feeler gauges, and frequency counters.
• Complete additional duties and projects as assigned.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED; apprenticeship or Journeyman’s Certificate strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and manufacturers’ manuals.
• Knowledge of US (and optionally European) Electrical Codes and accepted trade practices.
• Experience with annual maintenance and load‑testing procedures for electrical and mechanical systems.

Required skills

• Blueprint and schematic reading
• Operation of test equipment (voltmeter, ammeter, ohmmeter, continuity tester, feeler gauge, frequency counter)
• Mechanical maintenance of elevators, brakes, gears, cables, and safety devices
• Electrical maintenance including transformers, switchboards, controllers, and circuit breakers
• Knowledge of Otis GEN2 MRL elevator systems (highly desirable)
