Underwriting Specialist – Property, Engineering & Casualty

About the role

The Underwriting Specialist will provide technical underwriting support for the Property, Engineering and Casualty lines across the Mauritius and Seychelles territories. You will help drive strategic portfolio management, using data‑driven insights to maintain profitable growth and long‑term sustainability.

Key responsibilities

• Support the review and update of the Underwriting Risk Appetite framework, policy forms, and rating guidelines.
• Conduct key‑check exercises and underwriting file reviews to ensure accuracy, consistency and compliance.
• Collaborate with the Reinsurance team on Facultative, Special Acceptance and Treaty matters.
• Work with Pricing, Analytics and IT to gather data, identify negative trends and propose remedial actions.
• Analyse loss experience of onerous accounts, including deep reviews of risk surveys and adjuster reports, and recommend corrective measures.
• Partner with cross‑functional teams (Pricing, Client Management, Claims, Policy Administration) to improve process efficiency and forecast underwriting results.
• Assist the Underwriting Manager on new product projects and enhancements to existing products and systems.

Required profile

• HSC or Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Risk Management or a related field.
• Completed CII certification; ACII diploma in progress is preferred.
• Minimum 5 years underwriting experience in non‑motor corporate insurance.
• Strong knowledge of underwriting principles and conventional insurance products.
• Good understanding of both Facultative and Treaty reinsurance.
• High accuracy, attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.
• Excellent oral and written communication in English and French.
