Chief Credit Officer (CCO) – Lead Credit Underwriting

About the role

The Chief Credit Officer (CCO) will report directly to the Bank's Chief Executive and provide strategic leadership for the Credit Underwriting function. As the principal authority on credit assessment, the CCO ensures sound lending practices, protects asset quality, and aligns credit decisions with the Bank’s growth and risk objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the Credit Underwriting Team (CUT) in evaluating and sanctioning credit proposals within delegated authority limits.
• Present recommendations for high‑value exposures to credit forums and ensure rigorous credit judgement at all sanctioning tiers.
• Oversee loan review processes, maintain consistency in underwriting standards, and ensure timely renewal of credit facilities.
• Contribute to the development and periodic review of credit policies, underwriting standards, and risk frameworks.
• Implement credit scorecards and analytics to enhance underwriting quality.
• Maintain strong governance, segregation of duties, and internal controls within the credit function.
• Ensure compliance with Bank of Mauritius regulations, prudential guidelines, and internal policies.
• Act as primary liaison with auditors, regulators, and other stakeholders on credit‑related matters.

Required profile

• Extensive senior‑level experience in credit underwriting, risk management, and banking operations.
• Proven ability to lead large, cross‑functional teams and influence senior stakeholders.
• Deep understanding of regulatory requirements and best practices in credit governance.
• Strong analytical mindset with a focus on maintaining portfolio quality.
