Butchery Assistant

About the role

A butchery assistant supports the butchery team by helping with meat preparation, maintaining hygiene and assisting customers with their selections. The role involves using butchery tools and equipment, packaging products and keeping displays fully stocked and clearly labelled. It is described as a good entry point for someone wanting experience in a professional meat department.

Key responsibilities

• Greet and advise customers on cuts of meat, cooking methods and promotions, and handle requests for specific cuts with accurate portioning, packaging and weighing.
• Assist with cutting, trimming, boning, grinding and portioning meat, and safely operate equipment such as band saws, slicers, grinders and knives.
• Prepare meat products attractively, including marinating, seasoning and making ready-to-cook items such as sausages, kebabs or pre-packed meals.
• Receive and inspect deliveries for quality, temperature and compliance, help rotate stock so older products are sold first, monitor stock levels and label products correctly.
• Maintain a clean, sanitary workplace, follow food safety protocols to prevent cross-contamination, wear PPE and dispose of waste properly.

Required profile

• At least 4 years of work experience in retail.
• Matriculation or diploma.
• Recent SAPS clearance and a valid medical certificate.
