Fish Assistant - Seafood Retail

About the role

A Fish Assistant helps prepare and present a variety of fresh and frozen seafood in a retail setting, supporting tasks such as filleting, weighing, packaging and customer service. The role also covers stock rotation and keeping the seafood section clean. It suits someone wanting hands-on experience in seafood retail within a supportive team, based in Trianon, Quatre-Bornes.

Key responsibilities

• Greet customers and advise on fresh fish, shellfish and specialty seafood, including preparation methods, storage tips, nutritional information and cooking techniques.
• Promote daily specials and premium items, and handle custom orders such as filleting, cutting, weighing and packaging.
• Receive, inspect and store deliveries properly, and keep displays attractive and well-stocked, including ice beds for fresh fish.
• Track stock levels, report low stock, rotate products regularly and remove past sell-by dates or damaged items.
• Label products accurately with price, origin and allergen information.
• Clean, fillet, cut and prepare fish and seafood, operate fillet machines and scales safely, and follow recipes and portion sizes.
• Maintain holding temperatures and keep the workspace clean and sanitary, following food safety and hygiene protocols.
• Dispose of seafood waste correctly and follow health and safety rules with sharp tools and hazardous equipment.

Required profile

• At least 4 years of work experience in retail.
• Matriculation or diploma.
• Recent SAPS clearance and a valid medical certificate.
