Deli Assistant

About the role

A Deli Assistant interacts directly with customers while preparing, serving and packaging freshly made meals and sides. The role also involves keeping displays well-stocked and attractive, managing food safety protocols and contributing to a positive shopping experience. It suits someone who enjoys both food preparation and frontline service.

Key responsibilities

• Welcome customers and help them choose from prepared meals, sides, salads, soups and specialty items, giving information on ingredients, allergens and reheating/storage instructions.
• Promote daily specials and seasonal items, handle orders, portion and package food and accommodate special requests.
• Receive, inspect and store ingredients and prepared food, and keep hot, cold and ready-to-cook displays organised and well-stocked.
• Track inventory, report low stock and help with reordering; rotate products and remove past sell-by-date or damaged items.
• Label products clearly with price, ingredients, allergens and promotional details.
• Prepare and cook ready-to-eat foods such as entrees, sides, soups and salads to standardised recipes, using ovens, grills, slicers, steamers and food processors safely.
• Maintain holding and storage temperatures and keep the work area clean and sanitary, following food safety and hygiene protocols.

Required profile

• Minimum 4 years of work experience in retail.
• Minimum matric/diploma.
• A recent SAPS clearance.
• A valid medical certificate.
